Tejano Music by Tejano Gold Countdown

Vocally, this could be one of the best songs of the year. Well, let’s start at the beginning and break it down. To start off, the first couple of notes are right into the traditional sound of the great mariachi oldies. Awesome. Elida kicks off in the duet. Good start. Michael takes over and it’s a pretty even split with no big umph right at first. But watch out when they hit the chorus about a minute and a half in. Elida starts it off again with vocals reminiscent of her hit “Duele.”  This is where i make my point about Elida being a veteran. Not because of her age, not at all…but because of her decades of hits and how established she is in La Onda. And in a song like this, it’s just obvious. She’s not afraid to belt out those notes. It’s free and unrestrained. Now in the second verse, they two switch and Michael starts first in with response of the singer’s admission. And again, Michael does very well, but I have to say Elida knocks it out. It’s Michael’s single, but Elida could easily release it as her own (she could, I guess, they’re both with Freddie Records). I was really pulled in when i heard this song and am sure many of you will love it. And it’ll probably give you goosebumps, like it did me. Check it out on Michael’s new cd “Con Amor O Sin Amor.”

O.K. so I’m gonna be using this forum to put my two cents on music in la onda…old and new. Keep in mind, these are my own opinions. You may not agree, you don’t have to. So this weekend, i got Monica Castro’s latest single “Ven A Bailar”. This song has a kick from the very beginning. Honestly, this is a great song to play at a dance. First thing i thought, “this song would definitely get people outta their seats and onto the dance floor.” It’s got a really great bajo sexto part and the accordion runs are great. It’s Tejano with a kind of Control-type kick. And Monica hits the nail on the head with her vocals. Slightly sensual, smooth, not strained. Since I consider myself a Tejano journalist and historian, I like catching glimpses of the veteran artists in the newer ones. I hear a lot of Elida Reyna in Monica’s style and voice, but don’t get me wrong, Monica is all her own.  I completely think Monica’s going to have a great career if she keeps after it. There’s a whole bunch of talent in this young lady. In all, “Ven A Bailar” is a great song and i highly recommend it.�

They’ve done it again! The Tex Mex Kadillaks from the Rio Grande Valley in Texas are set to release their newest cd “Me Gustas Tu” on March 4th, which includes their newest hit single “Tu Retirada.” Although still a somewhat new band, these guys are making huge waves in La Onda.
